Major General Evariste Ndayishimiye was on Monday declared winner of the highly contested elections in Burundi. He is now the new President and Commander-in-Chief of the Burundi armed forces.
The General campaigned as flag-bearer of the ruling party CNDD-FDD which fetched 68.72% of the vote. This is a win with a clear majority.
“I will want to fix security issues in Burundi, Infrastructure development, general development and improving Burundi’s relations with countries in the region,” Gen. Ndayishimiye said on Monday.
Burundi’s electoral body Commission Electorale Nationale Indépendante (CeniBurundi) is being accused of openly manipulating poll figures.
The main opposition party CNL (National Congress for Liberty) has threatened that it is dragging the electoral commission to court to contest these results.
“The results announced by CeniBurundi are not credible to see the conditions under which the elections were held. They are prefabricated and stemming from a massive fraud. In the province and communes where CNL could have the PV, the results give victory to the CNL,” the party said.
CNL (National Congress for Liberty scored 24.19% of the total vote- this places them in the second position.
“There are threats and intimidation against CNL supporters across the country aimed at making people accept the rigged results that are not their choice,” CNL party said on Monday via its twitter handle.
Meanwhile, Union for National Progress (UPRONA) party has congratulated Gen. Evariste Ndayishimiye and his party upon winning the elections. UPRONA is in the third position with 1.64% of the total vote.
