Yaya Toure backs Drogba to become next Ivorian FA president

Yaya Toure has backed his former international teammate Didier Drogba to become the next president of the Ivorian Football Association [FIF].

The former Chelsea striker announced his intention to run for the position in September and is up against incumbent Sory Diabate and FIF vice-president Idriss Diallo.

“It’s time for change in our football,” Toure said during an Instagram live. “It needs modernity.

“When I say I support Drogba, it’s also for the good of the country. To have a former player of his kind investing himself in Africa.

“Didier was my big brother, my captain. People talked a lot about us but we [were] always calm, wise. We know each other. Too many people tried to criticise him the press, fans.”

Toure and Drogba played in the Ivory Coast national team together and helped them win the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015.

In March, the IFF announced Patrice Beaumelle as the new head coach after they parted ways with Ibrahim Kamara.

A date has yet to be scheduled for the presidential election due to the coronavirus pandemic.
