Following Hamilton’s wrapping up of the title in Mexico, two races ago, Smith sent the Briton a special message which was played over the team radio directly to Hamilton as he crossed the finish line.
Eager to catch up with his friend upon arrival this week, Hamilton met up with Smith in the Mercedes garage and the duo quickly took to social media to interact with fans.
Hamilton was seen introducing Smith to the camera, before telling his millions of adoring followers that the Hollywood star would be taking over social media for the day.
Smith was kitted out in the full Mercedes race suit and looked a mirror image of Hamilton, prompting the five-times title winner to query: ‘Are you racing or am I?’
Jokes continue to fly back and forth, with Hamilton telling the camera that Smith taught him how to drive and crafted him into the champion he is today.
Speaking on the drivers’ parade around the Yas Marina circuit before the race, Smith stopped for a chat with Sky Sports.
‘Lewis and I have been talking about this for five years since the Monte Carlo Grand Prix – the first time we ever met,’ he said.
‘I’m so proud to support my man here – the world champ. Lewis has granted an old man a wish!’
Hamilton is set to start on pole for Sunday’s race, as the curtain comes down on the Formula One season in Abu Dhabi.
But Smith had other ideas. He took a video of Hamilton tied to his chair and joked that he would take his place on the starting grid.
‘This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me man,’ Smith began. ‘You already won (the Championship), save something for other people! Nobody will know the difference!’
To which Hamilton replied: ‘You’d better win, man. You’d better win!’
