Five people including the former Resident District Commissioner of Kalungu District, Topista Mbabazi Kaggwa have been confirmed dead after a road accident in Kyazanga on Masaka road.
The Thursday evening accident involved a Toyota premium and a costa. The area traffic police blames the accident on reckless driving by the driver of the costa.
Several other people have been rushed to nearby medical centres in critical condition.
The identities of other victims and the causalities were not readily available by the time of filing this report.
Accidents along Masaka – Kampala highway which had taken an upward trend in 2016, decreased after the launch of an operation dubbed “Fiika Salaama” (reach safely) which was intended to tackle errant motorists, sensitise and discipline road users on safety and infrastructure protection.
Police have always insisted that accidents on major roads are due to human error. According to Ministry of Works and Transport performance report of 2016/17 at least 9,572 people have been killed in motor accidents in the last three years countrywide.
